Normally all the "extra weapons" would be scattered over battlefields but the Player rounds them up to be resold to possibly the enemy all over again. :D

It's important to remember that these games are still fun... when you actually get to play them, but Kojima breaks the cardinal sin when it comes to film: show don't tell. Instead he insists on telling you over and over and over and over again, then showing you, then telling you again... then being vague about all of that information... then just overusing the word "nanomachines" when it comes time to actually explain anything.
The entire length of this run is about 745 minutes (give or take a few seconds). Almost HALF of that (~370 minutes) is taken up by JUST the longer cutscenes (anything over 10 minutes). That's not even counting the several instances of gameplay broken up by 3-7 minute cutscenes.
Is MGS4 a game? Technically, by definition, yes... but realistically what we're looking at here is probably 25%-35% of actual gameplay... and the remainder is Hideo Kojima's student film passion project. Convoluted plot points aside, this game is more sitting around doing nothing, than it is playing. When I played this game for the second time in my life, at the 6:35:08 mark (~57 minute cutscene) I got up from the couch... took a shower... cooked spaghetti... ate it, and did my dishes before it had even finished. I might be alone here, but it is my personal opinion that games should be PLAYED and not watched... ESPECIALLY when the story is so so so so so so stupid and littered with cringe teenage edgelord bullcrap.
People sometimes will say, "Kojima always wanted to make a film". Okay... go do that, then. Don't make a twelve-hour cutscene, with occasional breaks to "press L1 to view a flashback", and call it a game. I don't think you could realistically adapt this into a successful movie/limited series, because once you open its over-complicated story to a wider audience, you'll dilute the ratio of rabid forgiving fanboys, to objective consumers.
No, I don't know why it works in The Last of Us. Maybe it's because that story isn't needlessly dense, and doesn't have an armless cyborg ninja fend of super soldiers with a sword in their teeth... I don't know... what I do know is that if you were to watch a film about the world's worst super soldier (which Snake is... he's never successfully infiltrated ANY place without the bad guys saying "Ha, we knew you were here the whole time... in fact we planned everything!") you'd probably find yourself asking, "What the hell is this? Why is everyone in this movie/show so weird? Why doesn't he just shoot that guy?"
