I'm pretty sure the eldritch entity is telepathic and it's sifting through people's memories, making them see or hear the past. The game is well planned, the long jumps and sliding platforms made me go outside the edge, I am immune of horror games and seen a ton of them. But this game mechanics has done a fair bit of justice.
