Though if memories serve me right, Barak species were never explained on their origins, except them being ugly motherfuckers with their food source being cannibalism which is why Baraka and his kind were looked down upon. Though as far as their whole race origins and how they came to be what they are now, I don't recall that ever being mentioned or explained. So if this scene is them finally shedding some light on Baraka species, as being affected by a disease that disfigures them, and turns them into violent cannibal monsters.
